All-rounder Glenn Maxwell is eager to put the experience gained during last year's stint with Hampshire to good use, come this weeks first Twenty20 International against England at the Rose Bowl in Southampton.

Maxwell played four Friends Life t20 fixtures at Thursday's venue in 2012 and, although he only took one wicket and managed a highest score of a mere 22 not out, knowledge of the conditions will prove advantageous.

"It's a beautiful batting wicket. It's a big ground as well, so it's going to be conducive to a lot of hard running in the field and it's going to be very tough to defend later on in the evening," said Maxwell.

"I think we'll be going all guns blazing and hopefully put a big score on the board. It's going to be a very tough competitive few games, we're just looking to hopefully get on top of them straight away."

Former fast bowler Glenn McGrath, meanwhile, is hopeful the tourists will put in a considerably stronger batting performance in limited-overs cricket – after the visiting order struggled during the recent three-nil Ashes defeat.

"Our bowlers have done well but we have struggled to find the right batting combination," he told the The Hindu. "We have changed a few things around this last Test, so hopefully we will improve but Australia has been well and truly beaten."
