England all-rounder Moeen Ali has become the latest player to step up in defence of captain Alastair Cook, saying the skipper has been working just as hard as always to get the team united.

While England rallied during the Test series against India and won it three-one, their one-day fortunes have been dismal and they are three down with one game to play. Cook, meanwhile, has slid back to poor form.

Cook's scores in the three completed ODIs are 14, 44 and nine, and the team's efforts have been well below par, prompting renewed calls from the pundits for him to resign, but Moeen has nothing but kind words.

Moeen said ahead of the match at Headingley on Friday: "He's been the same as he was (in the Tests). He's been exactly the same with the lads.

"He's been Cooky, trying to get everyone playing well, trying to do well for himself and I'm sure tomorrow he can do that and play well.

"There's still a lot to play for, players are playing for places and to win a game for England is important. He's been the same, trying to get us to stick together, working hard and executing a plan."

When asked if the players wanted to ease the pressure on Cook by doing well, Moeen added: "A little bit. We are playing for England, he's the captain and whatever he says we do.

"He's got all our backing and like any other game for England we're trying to do our best."
