Durham fast bowler Graham Onions' season has come to a premature end after he picked up a severe abdominal strain while playing against Nottinghamshire, thus ruling him out for at least six weeks.

Onions had suffered with a back injury earlier in the season, putting paid to his England chances, despite being part of the Lions side back then. He has nine Test caps and had been hoping for more.

Onions said: "I was obviously devastated when I received the results of the scan as the next six weeks of the season are hugely important for the team.

"Although I don't think I can play for the rest of the season, I'll be doing everything I can to try to get fit and help the lads out during those final few games."

He then tweeted: "A season to forget personally but still 6 huge weeks for the Durham lads to win some silverware. It's going to be a long winter."

Durham have not had the best County Championship season, sitting third from the bottom of Division One, but are third in group B of the One Day Cup so are still in line for a title.
