Oz appoint Saker as Lehmann’s assistant

Australia have announced the appointment of Melbourne Renegades coach David Saker as the national side's new assistant coach, taking up the post vacated by Craig McDermott months ago.

The former England bowling coach, who came under fire after Steve Finn's action adjustments made him 'unselectable', has been with Victoria for the past year, but will now be the full-time assistant to head coach Darren Lehmann.

Saker will not be part of the upcoming tour to Sri Lanka, where South Africa pace legend Allan Donald will serve as bowling coach for the Aussies. Saker will take up his post for the tour to SA in September.

Lehmann said of the news: "David’s experience working around the world with international teams will be invaluable, especially as we work toward the upcoming Indian Test series and the Ashes.

"His technical expertise in all facets of the game is a real bonus and very important when working with the young group we have.

"We spoke with a lot of people about this role and really took our time deciding what direction we wanted to go. David’s appointment gives us good clarity in our senior coaching group.

"What impressed me most about David was his vision of where he is heading as a coach and also where he wants to take our young group of bowlers and players.

"He and I have always had robust discussions about the good of Australian cricket, he is passionate and I appreciate that. I love his attitude and he will bring great energy to our group."

Should Lehmann take a short break from the team again, like he did recently when Justin Langer led the team in the Caribbean, then Saker will step into the head coach role.
