Prince quits selector job to focus on coaching
Former South Africa opener Ashwell Prince has stepped down from his role as a national selector, opting instead to focus on his coaching ambitions.
Prince was asked to be a selector in June last year, and was one of two former Proteas players on the four-man panel. The others are Errol Stewart, who is the other player, as well as Linda Zondi and Hussein Manack.
Prince, who has not been replaced on the panel yet, said on Cricinfo: “I feel I have more to offer as a coach, so that’s what I want to concentrate on.
“Being both a coach and a selector was not an option as it is regarded as a conflict of interest.”
Prince was the batting coach for the South Africa A side on their recent tour to Australia, and is hoping to secure a domestic coaching role soon. He is also studying further to get his level three coaching certificate.
If he does get a high-profile post, he will not be the first former SA player with little experience to do so this year. Former Proteas wicketkeeper Mark Boucher is the new Titans head coach, despite not having much formal experience.
