Prior is nursing a calf injury, but is confident of regaining full fitness ahead of Thursday's start.

The right-hander batted in the nets for an hour on Tuesday, wearing strapping over the left calf muscle injured during the tourists' tour fixture against Australia A in Hobart earlier this month.

He was free of discomfort for the entire practice session, leaving standby wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow's participation in the Gabba fixture unlikely.

Australia batsman Steven Smith, meanwhile, is wary of the threat posed by English fast bowler Chris Tremlet.

Bowling coach David Saker earlier this week near confirmed the presence of the tall Tremlett, who has taken 17 of his 49 Test wickets in Australia, team.

"He obviously did a very good job for them the last time they were out here," said Smith. "He is definitely one we have to be wary of with his extra height and extra bounce.

"Their bowling attack is strong, all of them are experienced and we will have to bat well against them."
