Proteas spinner signs county contract

South African spinner Keshav Maharaj has joined Lancashire for the remainder of the 2018 County Championship Division One.

Maharaj has taken 90 wickets in 22 Tests. Last month saw the talented left-armer clinch a record nine wickets in one innings against Sri Lanka.

“We’re really pleased that Keshav has joined the club. He’s a world-class spinner and will strengthen our bowling attack for the final four Championship games,” said head coach Glen Chapple.

“He is an international bowler with experience of bowling in English conditions and we’re looking forward to welcoming him to Old Trafford.”

The 28-year-old took 17 wickets during last year’s Test series against England.

“I am thrilled to be signing for Lancashire for the remainder of the season. Having previously played in England with South Africa, it’s been an ambition of mine to return and play county cricket,” added Maharaj.

“I am very much looking forward to joining up with the squad and hopefully I can make a significant contribution to help the team during my time here.”

Lancashire’s final four County Championship fixtures will be against Worcestershire, Somerset, Yorkshire and Hampshire.

Chapple’s team currently occupy last position in Division One’s eight-team standings, after one win, sixes defeats and three draws. They are six points behind seventh-placed Worcestershire. First-placed Surrey are 32 points ahead of second-placed Somerset.
