Rohit ready to team up with India

India opener Rohit Sharma will link up with the rest of the squad in Melbourne on Wednesday, although his selection for the third Test is far from guaranteed.

Following their impressive eight-wicket victory over Australia in the second Test earlier on Tuesday, coach Ravi Shastri told the media that Rohit will be assessed first before deciding if he will play or not.

“Rohit joins the team tomorrow. We will have a chat with him to see where he is placed physically because he has been quarantined for a couple of weeks,” said Shastri.

“We will have to see now how he feels before we take the call.”

Rohit suffered a hamstring injury during the IPL, where he led the Mumbai Indians to their fifth title earlier this month.

Since then, he has been undergoing treatment at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.

As such, he was unable to fly to Australia to join the rest of the India squad, although his absence created a controversy after skipper Virat Kohli – who is not in the India squad currently since he is on paternity leave – voiced his disappointment over not being kept up to date with the opener’s progress.

The right-hander arrived in Australia shortly before the start of the series – currently locked at 1-1 – but has been in quarantine in Sydney and has not had any practice since the IPL.

It was speculated that the third Test, set to start on January 7, could be shifted to Melbourne over the stringent Covid-19 restrictions which could have affected the players’ travelling plans for the fourth match in Brisbane.

However, in a statement later on the day, Cricket Australia opted to retain Sydney as the venue for the third Test.
