Root: We need to put Australia under pressure

England vice-captain Joe Root said his side is excited to play in the third Ashes Test, starting at Edgbaston on Wednesday, and will be eager to make up for their big defeat in the previous match.

Australia beat England by a massive 405 runs in the second Ashes Test at Lord's with the series now delicately poised at one-all after the hosts beat the Aussies in the first match in Cardiff.

Root said: "We've had a week off and it's a three-match series now. We've got an excitable bunch of guys here ready to play.

"Everyone is desperate to prepare well over the next two days and put that out on Wednesday. We need to build partnerships, build scores and put them under pressure."

The Three Lions have made a change to their side with Jonny Bairstow replacing Gary Ballance in the starting lineup.

Bairstow has been in prolific form with the bat for Yorkshire in the County Championship hitting five centuries this season.

Speaking about Bairstow, Root said: "He's playing exceptionally well, he's got five hundreds. Hopefully he can carry on the great form he has been in this summer.

"Having people like that knocking on the door is always healthy for competition for places and just shows the strength of English cricket in that middle order at the minute."
