Roy: The World Cup can’t come soon enough for England

Jason Roy can’t wait for the World Cup to start on Thursday after he bludgeoned 89 as England thrashed Afghanistan by nine wickets on Monday.

Jofra Archer and Joe Root grabbed three wickets each as the hosts bowled out Afghanistan for 160 with 11.2 overs unused.

And it only took England 17.3 overs to reach the 161 needed to win their final World Cup warm-up match with Roy crashing 89 from 46 balls.

England did lose Jonny Bairstow’s wicket for 39 but Joe Root provided the necessary support to help in-form Roy guide Trevor Bayliss’ side to victory.

“I am feeling really good. I want the tournament to start now. It was a good preparation leading into Thursday,” Roy told Sky Sports.

“They (Afghanistan) have got great lineup with their spin bowlers. I got used to Rashid’s pace so was nice to get some time out there.

“We want to be doing this on Thursday and doing it throughout the whole tournament. The World Cup can’t come soon enough.”
