Smith wants ‘smart’ spinning decks in SA

Australia

Australia captain Steve Smith says South African groundskeepers should be 'smart' and prepare spinning decks for the upcoming series against the Proteas, as it would benefit both sides ahead of the World Twenty20 in India.

The Aussies will face South Africa in three T20s before the sides head off to India for the ICC tournament. South Africa's first fixture is on 12 March against the hosts, while the Aussies face the West Indies on 13 March.

Smith said ahead of the series in SA, which starts on Friday: "Hopefully they're kind to us and prepare some sort of spinning conditions.

"I think that would be smart for both sides to do that."

When asked what his side would nee to do to win the trophy, Smith said: "Adapting to the conditions, that's a big one for us. Indian conditions are very different.

"And just making sure we do all the basics stuff in T20 cricket. Partnerships, making sure we start well in the first six overs with both bat and ball.

"And I think our fielding – I was pretty impressed with how we fielded in New Zealand in the recent Test series – hopefully we can keep that up. I think fielding is a big part of being successful in T20 cricket."

The three T20s in South Africa will be played in Durban, Johannesburg, and Cape Town. None are traditionally very friendly towards spinners.
