Sri Lanka's sudden vacancy in the coaching department has quickly been filled, with the board appointing batting coach Marvan Atapattu to the head coach role left open by Paul Farbrace this week.

Farbrace left the role after three months in charge of the side after being offered the assistant coach post by England, and will thus face his former charges when Sri Lanka go to England in May.

Atapattu was appointed for the tour to the UK, and for the visit to Sri Lanka by South Africa after that. As such, his deal is only until the end of July, while former all-rounder Ruwan Kalpage has been made his interim assistant.

The SLC said: "Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce that Mr. Marvan Atapattu has been appointed as the National Team Head Coach and Mr. Ruwan Kalpage as the Interim Assistant Coach with immediate effect.

"These appointments will be for the upcoming Ireland and England tour and the South Africa tour of Sri Lanka."

Sri Lanka leave for the UK soon to face Ireland in two ODIs in Dublin, starting on 6 May, and then have a T20, five ODIs and two Tests against England, ending on 24 June.
