South Africa will rest fast bowler Dale Steyn for the opening two fixtures of the five-ODI series against Pakistan.

Steyn was in doubt for the second and final Test in Dubai due to a hamstring injury, but recovered to play a lead role in the Proteas innings and 92-run triumph.

He will, however, miss ODIs one and two – before returning for the third in Abu Dhabi on 6 November. Batsman Colin Ingram, meanwhile, has been placed on standby for the veteran Hashim Amla.

Amla missed the final Test to be with his wife for the birth of their second child, and has yet to return to the United Arab Emirates.

Former coach Gary Kirsten will mentor South Africa's ODI batsmen this month and the next. Kirsten coached India to World Cup success in 2011.

"Gary is a World Cup winning coach and it would be naive for us not to tap into his wisdom," said team manager Mohammed Moosajee.

"We have a crop of young batsmen in the squad we feel will gain a lot of insight from his vast batting experience and knowledge."
