Cricketer-turned-commentator Andrew Strauss has apologised after calling former England team-mate Kevin Pietersen a "c**t".

The obscene remark was accidentally broadcast during Strauss' commentary stint during Saturday's fixture between the Marylebone Cricket Club and Rest of the World XI in London.

The fixture, which was organised to commemorate the bicentenary of Lord's, saw cricket's superstars – past and present – entertain an appreciative, near capacity crowd. The MCC won by seven wickets on the back of a big century from Australia's Aaron Finch.

"I apologise unreservedly, particularly to Kevin. I am mortified and profusely sorry," said Strauss, whose unsavoury comment occurred during a break in Sky Sports' television coverage – but was heard by listeners abroad on an audio feed.

The right-handed Pietersen, who scored just 10 on the weekend, was stumped by fellow Englishman Chris Read off the bowling of Pakistan spinner Saeed Ajmal.

Sky Sports had earlier tweeted: "Comments were made during a break of play which were heard overseas. We apologise for the language used."
