Thornely ton in vain

Michael Thornely's century was not enough for the Unicorns as they fell to a six-wicket loss at the hands of Somerset in Sunday's Clydesdale Bank 40 Group C clash at the County Ground in Taunton.
Thornely's 105 not out and handy cameos from Keith Parson and Josh Knappett carried the Unicorns to a decent total of 208 for five, after which half-centuries from Marcus Trescothick and James Hildreth saw the Sabres over the line with 35 balls to spare.
The right-handed Thornely's three-figure vigil was a measured affair. He orchestrated 11 fours across his 115-ball knock, and afforded Parsons and Knappett their respective dashes toward the tail of the innings.
Steve Kirby was the pick of the Somerset bowlers with figures of two for 47.
Somerset's pursuit got off to a flier thanks to Trescothick and Craig Kieswetter. The former England opener and England's Twenty20 International wicketkeeper-batsman weighed in with 53 and 45 respectively, with Hildreth later seeing his side home with a fine 50 not out.
Bradley Wadlan did his utmost to stave off defeat. His figures of two for 39, though, were never going to prove successful as his fellow bowlers failed to step up in support.
