Vijay: I want to play in all three formats

After scoring 72 to help India seal an ODI series win against Zimbabwe in Harare on Sunday, India opening batsman Murali Vijay wants to secure a spot in his national team in all three formats of the game.

Vijay helped his team post 271 for eight in their 50 overs and then looked on in the field as the bowlers skittled the African team out for 209 to see India take an unassailable two-nil series lead with one match left to play.

The 31 year-old Vijay, who is the regular opener in Tests, has found little playing time in the limited-overs formats due to the efforts of Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan. (Vijay has played 16 ODI's in the last five years).

But with Sharma and Dhawan both being rested for this tour to Zimbabwe, which also includes two T20 internationals, Vijay has an opportunity to stake his claim for a regular berth.

After scoring a single in the opening ODI, Vijay played an innings of substance on Sunday to remind the selectors of his efforts in the colour-clothing.

After the match, Vijay said: "I've been there or thereabouts in the one-dayers and have been the third opener for quite some time, so this is a good opportunity for me to establish myself as a one-day player.

"I always wanted to play this format and play all three formats. So it's just around the corner. You've got to wait your turn. I'm not in a hurry, but when I get an opportunity I'm keen to score runs."

The third match of the ODI series takes place in Harare on Tuesday.
