Waugh questions Maxwell’s Victoria snub

Australia selector Mark Waugh has questioned the way Victoria choose their Sheffield Shield teams, saying Glenn Maxwell should be playing.

The all-rounder seems to have fallen out of favour after requesting a transfer to New South Wales before the season began, which the Bushrangers denied.

Waugh feels there is something other than Maxwell’s cricket skills influencing his non-selection, because he should be in the starting XI.

Waugh told Fox Sports’ Inside Cricket: “He should have been playing. He’s definitely in the best 11 players in Victoria.

“From an Australian point of view, he’s quite capable of playing Test match cricket.

“You need to be asking the Victorian selectors why they left him out. It surely can’t be cricket-related because he would be in the team.

“The problem is, they have come out and won the game. It will be tough for him to get back in.

“He should be in that team. His record is far better than most of the players in the team.”

Former Australia skipper Allan Border agreed that the snub had nothing to do with Maxwell’s talent, and suggested Maxwell look eslewhere soon.

Boder said: “It’s got to be something more than form or talent or skills or potential.

“I don’t think he’ll move now but if I were him, I’d be looking elsewhere pretty soon.”
