Pakistan coach Dav Whatmore was the picture of disappointment on Wednesday, after his side fell to 99 all out against South Africa on day one of the second Test in Dubai.

Proteas spinner Imran Tahir made his return to the side with a superb five-fer, and Dale Steyn taking three wickets to reduce the hosts to ashes. Zulfiqur Babar top-scored with 25, and Whatmore said they only had themselves to blame.

A frustrated Whatmore said: "It wasn't according to plan. We expected the opposition to come back strong but I don't think they did. We orchestrated most of our dismissals ourselves.

"I am trying to get a reason for it, whether its complacency or whether they thought they could carry on from 400 runs where they left off."

The Proteas were on 128 for three at stumps, leading by 29 runs thanks to an unbeaten half century from skipper Graeme Smith. But Whatmore felt his lads could make a comeback on day two, if they focused.

He continued: "We really need to pull the proverbial out to get back into this match. We still have to get another seven wickets.

"If we can do that in a reasonable time, then we will hopefully be able to bat at some point tomorrow. And then we need to bat and bat and bat."

The coach added he would not be pulling any punches when admonishing the players, saying: "You need to do what you need to do and they have to allow me to do that.

"When it's time to be firm, you have to do that. They're expecting that. We will be having a little talk. We need to get it off our chests."

His ire continued when discussing Shan Masood and Azhar Ali, who made 21 and 19 respectively but then fell to Imran Tahir and Morne Morkel, saying: "I am pretty angry with those two.

"You can't spend time and get a foundation and then get out when they did."
