Windies lose Samuels to injury

Batsman Marlon Samuels has been ruled out of the West Indies' limited-overs series due to a recurring wrist injury.

Batsman Marlon Samuels has been ruled out of the West Indies' limited-overs series due to a recurring wrist injury.

Team physiotherapist CJ Clark confirmed that Samuels will soon return home, missing the five ODI and two Twenty20 Internationals.

"It will require surgery management and he returns home to seek that surgical opinion and advice from the WICB medical panel, headed by Doctor Akshai Mansingh," said Clark.

The inexperienced Chadwick Walton, who was part of the Test squad that endured a two-nil series loss recently, has been named as a replacement.

Walton was capped twice during the Champions Trophy in South Africa in 2009, but fell for a duck in both matches, against Pakistan and Australia.

"Chad has been on tour with us from the start, including the tour of India, without getting an opportunity. He has been working hard and growing as a player, and I feel confident that when his opportunity comes he will make the most of it," added coach Ottis Gibson.

The first ODI will get underway at Eden Park in Auckland on Thursday.
