Woakes likely to miss New Zealand Tests

England are set to be without paceman Chris Woakes for another Test series, this time the visit by New Zealand, as he has required knee surgery and will be out for up to six weeks.

Woakes missed the West Indies tour due to a foot injury, and it was while doing rehab for this that he injured his knee. He has had surgery already, and will thus be out of action for both Warwickshire and England.

An ECB statement said on Thursday: "The ECB medical team confirms that England and Warwickshire bowler Chris Woakes underwent uncomplicated keyhole surgery on his left knee for a meniscal tear earlier today.

"The injury occurred while undergoing rehab for his foot injury. His rehab is likely to take a further four to six weeks."

This means the places of Chris Jordan and Ben Stokes are fairly safe heading into the series against the Black Caps, which starts on 21 May at Lord's.
