Yuvi gets thrown an international lifeline

Allrounder Yuvraj Singh has been thrown a lifeline by the India selectors as he was recalled to the squad for the three-match T20 series in Australia at the end of January.

The 34 year-old Yuvraj, who was the player of the tournament in the victorious 2011 World Cup on home soil, last played an international game in April 2014.

The India selectors have made it clear that they will experiment in the shortest format to find the best combinations ahead of the World T20 in March next year.

Left-arm paceman Ashish Nehra, who is 36 year old, has also been recalled for the shortest format with his last game for India being an ODI in March 2011.

Sandeep Patil, the chairman of selectors, said: "Yuvraj Singh will always remain special. The selectors are very happy, and the captain is also very happy to have him back.

"We cannot promise any player whether he will be part of the next tour or the World Cup. We want every player to perform and every player has a chance to come back in the team.

"Keeping in mind World T20, this is a chance for a lot of players to use as a platform. Those who have not been selected, they were all discussed. We have extended the pool."

Before the three T20s, India will play five ODIs against the Aussies and the biggest surprise was the omission of batsman Suresh Raina for the 50-over matches following a poor home series recently against South Africa at home.

The 23 year-old left-arm seamer Brainder Sran has received his maiden international call-up while there is also a place in the squad for batsman Manish Pandey.

MS Dhoni will skipper the side in both formats and will lead the team in the World T20 on home soil.
