=9. Abid Ali (Australia) – 112 v Sri Lanka, Melbourne, 2013

Abid Ali impressed at the top of the order against Australia in Dubai in 2019. He had to really dig deep after fellow opener Shan Masood fell early in a failed chase. The Aussies won the match by six runs.

=9. Phil Hughes (Pakistan) – 112 v Australia, Dubai, 2019

Phil Hughes was outstanding against Sri Lanka at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 2013. He navigated a challenging pitch during almost three hours at the crease. He hit 14 fours and no sixes.

8. Temba Bavuma (South Africa) – 113 v Ireland, Benoni, 2016

Temba Bavuma is one of three South Africans on this list of the highest scores on ODI debut. The role of limited-overs opener wasn’t entirely familiar to him at the time, but he grabbed the opportunity successfully against Ireland in Benoni in 2016.

7. Andy Flower (Zimbabwe) – 115 v Sri Lanka, New Plymouth, 1992

Andy Flower was the man for the big occasion against Sri Lanka during 1992’s Cricket World Cup match in New Plymouth. His ton on ODI debut, though, couldn’t bring Zimbabwe victory.

6. Martin Guptill (New Zealand) – 122 v West Indies, Auckland, 2009

The year was 2009 and the scene Auckland, as Martin Guptill announced himself on the ODI stage with a superb century against the West Indies. The match ended in a washout, though.

=4. Colin Ingram (South Africa) – 124 v Zimbabwe, Bloemfontein, 2010

Ingram had the highest score on ODI debut by a South African for 15 years before Breetzke broke it. Ingram’s ODI career could have lasted longer, had he not opted for a Kolpak contract in the United Kingdom.

3. Rahmanullah Gurbaz (Afghanistan) – 127 v Ireland, Abu Dhabi, 2021

Rahmanullah Gurbaz has since become somewhat of a household name in international and franchise cricket, but it was a few years ago when he the Afghanistan opener first shone – and early at that – at ODI level.

2. Desmond Haynes (West Indies) – 148 v Australia, St John’s, 1978

Four decades ago, 148 in ODI cricket was considered a really big individual score – never mind the fact that it was done on debut. Desmond Haynes was pure enterprise on that famous day in St John’s, West Indies.

1. Matthew Breetzke (South Africa) – 150 v New Zealand, Lahore, 2025

Matthew Breetzke reminded the South Africa selectors why he should have perhaps been named in the Champions Trophy squad with a world record 150 on ODI debut in a tri-series that also involved Pakistan.
