9. Shahid Afridi – 18 balls for ODI 50 vs Netherlands, 2002
This was against the Netherlands in Colombo, Sri Lanka, in 2002. The big-hitting Pakistan all-rounder was at his best. He hit six sixes in his 55 not out. Afridi was renowned for big, quick innings throughout his limited-overs career. This was certainly one of them.
8. Shahid Afridi – 18 balls for ODI 50 vs Sri Lanka, 1996
This was against Sri Lanka in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1996. Afridi features twice on this list. He hit 11 sixes in his 102. Alongside Jayasuriya in Singapore, Afridi in Nairobi is probably the most obscure international cricket venue on this list. Afridi will be remembered by man for his big-hitting exploits in ODI and T20I cricket.
7. Simon O’Donnell – 18 balls for ODI 50 vs Australia, 1990
O’Donnell impressed for Australia against Sri Lanka in Sharjah in 1990. The Sri Lankan bowling attack really struggled in the United Arab Emirates. He hit six sixes in his 74. He shared a big stand with centurion Dean Jones in the middle order.
6. Liam Livingstone – 17 balls for ODI 50 vs Netherlands, 2022
Livingstone took advantage of the Netherlands in Amstelveen in 2022. The England all-rounder was in fine form. He finished with six sixes in a final score of 66 not out. Logan van Beek, Shane Snater, Bas de Leede and other Dutch bowlers were at a loss as to where or how to bowl to Livingstone.
5. Martin Guptill – 17 balls for ODI 50 vs Sri Lanka, 2015
Guptill did this against Sri Lanka in Christchurch in 2015. The New Zealand opener really got going. He ended with 93, lined with eight sixes. Guptill, remember, is one of the few batters with a double-century in ODI cricket.
4. Kusal Perera – 17 balls for ODI 50 vs Pakistan, 2015
Pallekele was the venue and Pakistan the opposition when Perera hit this record knock in 2015. The Sri Lankan big-hitter was outstanding. His 68 including 13 fours. Pakistan were really challenged by his ability to find the gaps along the ground, rather than hit over the ropes.
3. Sanath Jayasuriya – 17 balls for ODI 50 vs Pakistan, 1996
Jayasuriya hit this record in Singapore against Pakistan in 1996. The Sri Lankan opener went particularly big this day. He ended with 76, including five sixes. Alongside Afridi in Nairobi, Jayasuriya in Singapore is probably the most obscure international cricket venue on this list.
2. Matthew Forde – 16 balls for ODI 50 vs Ireland, 2025
Forde did this against Ireland in 2025. The venue was Dublin, where he hit two sixes and eight fours in his final total of 58. Forde’s knock was not the highest on the day for the West Indies, as Keacy Carty struck a century for the men in maroon from the Caribbean.
1. AB de Villiers – 16 balls for ODI 50 vs West Indies, 2015
De Villiers did this against the West Indies in Johannesburg in 2015. The Wanderers crowd was thrilled by the South African superstar. De Villiers ended with 149, including 16 sixes.
It will be interesting to see if any other batters pass Forde and de Villiers’ records in the future. This could happen in the Champions Trophy, Cricket World Cup or one of the many bilateral ODI series that happen across world cricket each year.
If you were wondering who rounds out the top 10, after this list of nine, it’s Australia’s Glenn Maxwell in 10th position. His 50 also came off 18 balls, against India, in Bangalore in 2013. Maxwell hit seven sixes and three fours in his final score of 60.
