Cobras pull off Super Over victory
The Cape Cobras remained in 2014 Champions League Twenty20 contention, on the back of a tense Super Over triumph over the Barbados Tridents in Friday’s entertaining Group B fixture at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali, Chandigarh.
Earlier, Barbados big-hitter Jonathan Carter’s cavalier century proved in vain. Carter’s quickfire 111 powered the Caribbean outfit to a formidable 174 for eight, after which opposition captain Hashim Amla’s commanding half-ton saw the scores leveled.
The match proper was concluded by batsman Sybrand Engelbrecht’s two runs off the final delivery. Three would have brought an outright triumph, but he was later at hand to bowl a tight Super Over. Barbados need 12, but only managed 10.
The result pushed the South African franchise to fourth position in the five-team standings, while the men from West Indies remain rooted to the foot. Friday’s second and final CLT20 showdown will see the Northern Nights of New Zealand clash with the Kings XI Punjab at the same venue.
