There was no chance of play on day three of Sri Lanka's tour match against Northamptonshire at the County Ground, as heavy overnight rains and persistent drizzle made it impossible and play was called off early.

There was not much hanging around for the teams as the umpires inspected the field and found their feet under water. This left Northants still 412 runs behind the 558 for eight declared the Sri Lankans posted.

Though a result won't be possible if play resumes on Sunday, the fourth and final day, Sri Lanka will hope for some play at least, to give their bowlers more time in the middle ahead of the first Test against England on Thursday.

Sri Lanka's batting effort was a good work out for many, with Lahiru Thirimanne and Kaushal Silva both making 150-plus scores, while Mahela Jayawardene, Dinesh Chandimal and Dilruwan Perera also had extended knocks.
