Du Preez powers Proteas to victory

Proteas Women allrounder Mignon du Preez hit an unbeaten 90 against India to help her side to a seven wicket victory in the third ODI at Senwes Park.

The victory was also set up by an excellent bowling display from Shabnim Ismail who bagged four wickets as the Proteas bowled India out for 240.

For India key performers Smirti Mandhana (0) and Mithali Raj (4) misfired and while Deepti Sharma was able to craft 79 and Veda Krishnamurthy 56, India struggled to build partnerships.

South Africa used seven bowlers in all with Ismail (4/30) the pick while the team will be pleased that Chloe Tryon (2/48) was able to bowl a full quota of ten overs for the first time since returning from injury.

In their reply South Africa lost big-hitter Lizelle Lee (10) early but Laura Wolvaardt and Andrie Steyn (30) settled things down before the latter was caught and bowled by Poonam Yadav.

Wolvaardt would put on 118 with new partner Du Preez who took the attack to the India bowlers.

Ekta Bisht had Wolvaardt caught in the 39th over but it would be the final wicket of the innings but not before she passed 1000 ODI runs at the tender age of 18.

Du Preez (90*) saw the team home with the aid of skipper Dane van Niekerk who played a glittering cameo of 41 not out off just 30 balls.

South Africa lose the series 2-1 after India triumphed in the opening two matches but do take 2 ICC  Women’s Championship for the triumph in Potchefstroom.
