England blast past Sri Lanka by ten wickets
England easily eclipsed a decidedly average total from Sri Lanka to claim the first victory of the series and move into a 1-0 lead.
Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat, but struggled to take the initiative with wickets falling too regularly.
Danushka Gunathilaka showed intent early on, but an injudicious swing at a Liam Plunkett delivery saw him caught behind for 22 with Sri Lanka on 39.
Kusal Mendis was next to go consuming nine balls, but failing to score before he was trapped leg before by Plunkett.
Jason Roy produced a brilliant bit of fielding, running out Kusal Perera, to leave Sri Lanka 77 for 3 and the pattern of the innings had been established with Sri Lanka unable to build any momentum.
Sri Lanka's walking wounded Angelo Matthews and Dinesh Chandimal steadied the ship but Matthews who passed a late fitness test and Chandimal, who required treatment for a suspected hamstring strain, couldn't really score as freely as the surface suggested was possible with Matthews throwing his wicket away when he looked well set, holing out in the deep off the bowling of Adil Rashid.
Upul Tharanga would manage a late charge finishing on an unbeaten 53 but Sri Lanka limped to a total of 254 for 7.
England Openers Roy and Alex Hales made short work of the total eclipsing the score in the 35th over to see England to a resounding ten wicket victory.
Hales raced to his third ODI hundred before Roy joined him in surpassing three figures. Hales finished unbeaten on 133 while Roy managed 112 not out as England thrashed Sri Lanka by ten wickets.
