Essex go top despite abandonment

Persistent rain saw Nottinghamshire's Clydesdale Bank clash with Essex abandoned but the result was enough to see the Eagles draw level with Somerset at the top of Group C.
Persistent rain saw Nottinghamshire's Clydesdale Bank clash with Essex abandoned but the result was enough to see the Eagles draw level with Somerset at the top of Group C.
Having been put in to bat, the hosts were soon one down with Alex Hales bowled by Graham Napier for eight.
A rain shower then sent the players off the field in just the third over and they didn't return for some time.
With the match reduced to 27 overs a side, Ali Brown and Rikki Wessels chipped in with handy contributions of 27 and 35 respectively to give the Outlaws a fair platform to build from.
However, Ravi Bopara and Tim Phillips proceeded to make easy pickings of the Notts middle order, with the hosts slipping from 70 for two to 102 for seven.
Set 128 for victory, Essex never had the chance to mount a response, with unwanted rain causing the game to be called off.
The one point handed to each team sees Essex join Somerset on ten points at the top of Group C, with the latter ahead on net run rate.
