The first ODI between England and India was abandoned without a ball bowled, as persistent rain saw play at the County Ground in Bristol rendered an impossibility.

The covers were on overnight due to rain and at no point in the day did they look like being removed. With the ground not having floodlights, and not a very good drainage system, play was deemed unlikely early on.

This was especially disappointing news for England opening batsman Alex Hales, who was set to make his debut in the format, after impressing for Nottinghamshire and in the T20 side.

Now the show moves to Cardiff in Wales, where the second match will be played on 27 August. Cardiff home side Glamorgan announced after the abandonment that ticket holders from Bristol could exchange their tickets on a first come, first served basis.
