Rain prevented the occurrence of the first Twenty20 International between Sri Lanka and New Zealand at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.

The first delivery was scheduled to be bowled at 18:30 local time (13:00 GMT), but three hours later, the inclement weather that had marred the preceding ODI series between the same opposition in Hambantota and Dambulla earlier this month had not relented.

Umpires Ruchira Palliyaguruge and Raveendra Wimalasiri, meanwhile, noted 10:05 local time as the cut-off for a potentially heavily-reduced fixture of five overs per side. But the let-up never happened.

The hosts named the uncapped Ramith Rambukwella and leg-spinner Seekkuge Prasanna in a 15-man squad for the two-match series. Seamer Kyle Mills, meanwhile, has retained the stand-in captaincy in the absence of the rested Brendon McCullum and injured Kane Williamson.

The second and final T20I will be hosted by the same venue on Thursday.
