Chris Gayle tried his brazen best to trump fellow half-centurion Gautam Gambhir but ultimately came up short as the Kolkata Knight Riders beat the Royal Challengers Bangalore by 47 runs in Saturday's Indian Premier League clash at Eden Gardens.

Leading from the front to the fullest extent, Kolkata captain Gambhir powered his way through nine boundaries and five sixes en route to 93 from just 51 balls. Within two strikes of a maiden Twenty20 century, the left-hander was left disappointed when he holed out in the deep off the bowling of Indian team-mate Zaheer Khan.

Brendon McCullum and Jacques Kallis, meanwhile, weighed in with complementary cameos of 43 and 41 as the hosts reached a formidable total of 190 for four. No Bangalore bowler escaped punishment, with Khan the most expensive of the lot as his four overs fetched all of 48 runs.

The Royal Challengers' pursuit received an early blow when Tillakaratne Dilshan perished for a single and the in-form AB de Villiers was removed by fellow South African Kallis for a first-ball duck.

Chris Gayle, true to his attacking nature, tonked seven fours and six sixes on his way to a swashbuckling 86 from 58 deliveries. Despite the savage nature of the West Indian's innings, it was not enough to steal the show from Gambhir's superb vigil.

Saturday's result close in on the Delhi Daredevils at the top of the nine-team standings, with just one point separating first and second now, while Bangalore remain fourth.
