Having deployed all of nine bowlers in the first innings and seven in the second, the the composition of the tourists' attack for the series opener at Trent Bridge remained unclear.

Derbyshire's choice to bat first brought a final total of 326 for five declared, with the response amounting to 341 for six declared. The home side later moved to another declaration on 156 for three, leaving the Indians a stalemate reply of 143 for five.

Seamer Ishant Sharma went without a wicket throughout, while the uncapped Pankaj Singh and the recalled Varun Aaron failed to capitalise against a host order entirely void of international experience.

Opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan disappointed with mere contributions of six and nine, while all-rounder Stuart Binny pushed for selection in the Test XI by scoring a promising 81 not out.
