Playing at the brand new Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium for the first time, the Pune Warriors made sure it was delightful day for the home crowd as they eased past the Kings XI Punjab by 22 runs on Sunday.

It was an all-round performance for the Pune side as they posted 166 for six in their 20 overs. In reply the Kings XI found it hard to stay ahead of the run rate and could only manage 144 for eight.

Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly won the toss for the Warriors, but he was first man out after a brief knock of 18. His opening partner Jesse Ryder could make just eight as he was run out by Praveen Kumar.

Fresh from his recent recall to the Indian Twenty20 International side, Robin Uthappa (40) combined with West Indian Marlon Samuels (46) for an 81-run stand for the third wicket. However, both became victims of Harmeet Singh who also claimed Callum Ferguson cheaply to finish with figures of three for 24.

Australian all-rounder Steve Smith fired two massive sixes at the back end of the innings and his cameo of 25 off 12 helped the Pune side to 166 for six.

The Kings XI Punjab's pursuit got off to a disastrous start as both Paul Valthaty and Adam Gilchrist were run out to leave them on nine for two. Abhishek Nayar and Mandeep Singh added 24 each, but the bowling of Pune made it hard to score the runs at a fast pace.

There was no real impact from the usually big-hitting Dimitri Mascherenhas who could score just five, while Bipul Sharma provided some hope with 35 off 18 balls.

However, with wickets falling regularly, it was just too much for the left-hander to do as the Punjab side fell short by 22 runs.
