Half-centuries from opener Saurabh Tiwary and South African captain AB de Villiers and three key wickets from seamer Vinay Kumar afforded the Royal Challengers Bangalore a 20-run triumph over the Pune Warriors in Thursday's Indian Premier League fixture at the Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium.

De Villiers smashed 50 not out off 23 balls to propel Royal Challengers to 187 for three off their 20 overs.

And although Warriors opener Robin Uthappa responded with some big hitting of his own, his 75 (five sixes and five fours) wasn't enough for the IPL's bottom club.

On a slow pitch, Royal Challengers opener Chris Gayle found it tough to score off the Warriors' spinners and was caught at deep extra cover for 21.

Tiwary (52) and Virat Kohli (25) put on 63 to add some momentum but it was de Villiers who really pressed the accelerator and gave the innings a dramatic finish when blasting 26 off the final over from Ashok Dinda.

The Warriors also started at a modest pace and were left needing 66 off the final five overs for victory.

Angelo Mathews hit 32 off 19 balls to threaten a dramatic victory but when he and Uthappa perished in quick succession it was game over.
