Smuts piles on the misery for Lions

Proteas allrounder Jon-Jon Smuts struck a knock of 117 to put the Warriors in control of their Sunfoil Series opener against the Highveld Lions at the Wanderers.

After a brilliant effort from Warriors openers Eddie Moore (115) and David White (94) laid the foundations on day one Smuts helped move the visitors to 504 for 8 before the declaration came.

Wicketkeeper Clyde Fortuin (65) and Sisanda Magala (43) also made handy contributions on what seemed to be an excellent batting surface in Johannesburg.

Magala (2/23) struck twice with the ball in the final session to reduce the Lions to 53 for the loss of Stephen Cook (20) and Rassie van der Dussen (25).

Cook would have been eager to put in a good showing with the openers slot for the first Test against Bangladesh up for grabs and Aiden Markram notching a century on Tuesday in the Titans clash with the Dolphins.

Wiaan Mulder (25*) and Omphile Ramela (15*) were however able to guide the Lions to the close of play without further loss.

The Lions were 91/2 at the close of play still needing 262 runs to avoid the follow on.
