Super Kings edge Royals to go top

The Chennai Super Kings jumped to the top of the Indian Premier League table following their 12 run win over the Rajasthan Royals on Sunday night.

MS Dhoni won the toss and chose to bat first on a slow track at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. However, the hosts found themselves in trouble on 15 for two after early strikes from Ankit Sharma and Chris Morris.

Opening bat Brendan McCullum was joined at the crease by South Africa's Faf du Plessis and together the patched up the Super Kings innings. The duo added 101 runs in 12 odd overs before du Plessis was run out after a direct hit from Shane Watson.

McCullum would fall in the 17th over for a well played 81 off 61 balls as the Super Kings would finish on 157/5 in their allotment.

In reply, the Rajasthan Royals' Ajinkya Rahane and Watson started off well enough, putting on 37 runs for the first wicket.

Ravindra Jadeja came into the fray and practically turned the game on its head with an inspired spell of bowling. The left-arm tweaker rattled through the visitors top order, finishing with 4/11 off his four overs and leaving the Royals reeling on 90/5 in a man of the match winning performance.

Sanju Samson and James Faulkner provided some resistance, but the task proved too big for them to handle as the rate kept climbing. Morris would be left stranded on 16  not out as the Royals fell just short of the total.
