Conditions on Wednesday, the reserve day after inclement weather prevented play earlier this week, proved clearer, but the outfield remained sodden despite no further rain.
"The bowling run-up really was really and truly unsuitable, even for club cricket," said Ireland coach Phil Simmons.
"We couldn't put our players through that and the right decision was made in the end, so we'll come back and see if it's fit enough."
The second ODI is scheduled at the same venue for Thursday.
