Fast bowler Craig Young's telling performance on debut led Ireland to a convincing seven-wicket victory over Scotland in Monday's first ODI at The Village in Malahide, Dublin.

Young delivered outstanding figures of five for 46 to resign the Scots to a severely insufficient 172 all out in 40.3 overs, which would have read considerably less – had the hard-hitting Michael Leask not struck a late-order half-century.

All-rounder Kevin O'Brien, captaining the hosts in the absence of regular skipper Ed Joyce, stood at the fore of a strong reply. O'Brien gathered seven fours and a solitary six en route to a commanding 56 not out, as the Irish welcomed triumph with all of 80 deliveries to spare.

The remainder of the three-match series will be played at the same venue on Wednesday and Friday.
