Poonam Yadav starred with the ball as India cruised to a 17-run victory over hosts Australia in the first match of the Women’s Twenty20 World Cup in Sydney.

The 28-year-old leg-spinner took four for 19, including the wicket of Ellyse Perry for a golden duck as the defending champions fell to 115 all out chasing India’s 132.

FULL SCORECARD: India (132/4) beat Australia (115) by 17 runs

India batted first and reached 41 without loss in the first five overs, before losing three wickets in quick succession when a middle order stand between Jemimah Rodrigues (26) and Deepti Sharma (49 not out) saw them through to reach 132 for four.

Australia started slower with only Alyssa Healy, who top-scored with 51, making double figures from the top four.

After Healy fell to Yadav, the rest of the batters soon followed, with only Ash Gardner (34) making any dent on the India total with the bottom six making just 11 runs as Australia struggled to reach 115.
