Glenn Maxwell upbeat on Australia Test recall chances with Asian tours looming

Glenn Maxwell has revealed talks held with Australia selectors over a possible return to the Test lineup.

Despite naming expanded training groups ahead of the Ashes and England Lions vs Australia A series, Maxwell was not in the wider group.

The big-hitting allrounder has not given up hope of playing Test cricket again, however, he believes he can put on Sheffield Shield performances that will enable him to force his way back into the team.

“It’s definitely realistic,” Maxwell said.

“I think I am probably playing as well as ever have at the moment.

“I feel really good about my game. I have been able to work on different techniques for different formats, which has really helped going forward.

“I have been in constant contact with selectors and they have been really clear about if opportunities do pop up then I am ready for red ball.”

His ability against spin make him a great candidate for Australia’s upcoming tours to Asia.

Australia are set to visit Pakistan in March and April, Sri Lanka in June and July and play a one-off Test against Afghanistan in India in September, which will be followed by four Tests against India.

“Next year is obviously a heavy sub-continent tour year. There could be opportunities with guys coming in and out,” the Melbourne Stars captain said.

“There is a lot of cricket next year, you don’t want to burn guys out through the season so there could be a host of changes.

“So I have to make sure I am playing well when they pick those squads in any format.”

Maxwell has played all of his Test matches for Australia on foreign soil in Asia, but has an impressive First Class record.
