Women’s Ashes: England and Australia share dramatic draw in Test as series remains alive
England and Australia both came close to snatching victory in a thrilling finale before the one-off Test at Canberra finished in a draw to keep the Women’s Ashes alive.
An attacking declaration from Australia captain Meg Lanning just before tea on the fourth and final day set England a target of 257 runs to win off 48 overs, where a victory for the hosts would see them retain the Ashes.
The tourists had looked on course for a famous win as they were left needing 45 runs off the final 60 balls with seven wickets in hand.
However, Australia battled back and were favourites themselves after reducing England to 244 for nine in the 46th over.
But, in a final twist to the tale, Kate Cross and Sophie Ecclestone kept Australia at bay for the final 13 balls to snatch a dramatic draw.
Australia skipper Meg Lanning was left stunned by the final day’s play.
“Oh, wow, still quite know what quite happened in that last hour,” Lanning said.
“England batted extremely well, but to fight back. I’m m extremely proud of the group. That’s the great thing, we aren’t relying on one or two players, that says a lot for the pathway programs . Annabel Sutherland was outstanding. I need a rest after that. It’s a great series, two great sides.”
England captain Heather Knight was named player of the match after her first innings ton.
“It’s a place I love batting,” Knight said at the post-match presentation.
“I’ve really enjoyed the Test, what a brilliant game from both teams, gone toe to toe, and I don’t think it deserves a draw at end. Three days before the ODIs so will have to recover well, but feel pretty good.”
Knight also gave tribute to England stalwart Katherine Brunt who might have played her final Test.
“A word for Katherine, if it is her last Test, the way she bowled and fought, she is a real warrior, and really pleased that we got close. Probably an opportunity missed, but we’ll look back and think what a game to be involved in.”
