Starc in doubt for Boxing Day Test

Australia fast bowler Mitchell Starc may not turn out for his team in the fourth Ashes Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Starc suffered a bruised heel in Australia’s series-clinching innings and 41 run win over England in Perth.

The quick has been named in an unchanged 13-man squad for the Boxing Day Test match at the ‘G’ despite the injury.

Steve Smith revealed the squad in the post-match press conference and said he hoped that the paceman will be fit but with the series wrapped up caution may be the better part of valour.

Smith said: “Having just seen him he has said ‘I’m playing’ – whether he has a choice in the matter I’m not sure.

“He wants to play – but that’s something we have to sum up. We’ve wrapped the series up and we’d love to win 5-0 and have the big three going all the time.

“But we’ve also got an important tour to South Africa after this series, which we’d love to have him available for. We’ll see how he pulls up over the next couple of days. I’m sure that’ll determine which way we go.”

Australia are 100% committed to pushing for a whitewash over England in this series according to Smith.

He added: “I was part of the series back in 2013/14 when we did that and it was an amazing part of my life and everyone else’s who was involved as well.

“I’d love to do that again but we’ll just take it one step at a time. First of all, we’ll enjoy the success we’ve had over the last couple of weeks and have a good celebration and move on.”
